Mark is 28 years old and he started falconry as an apprentice 6 years ago. He is currently a pharmacy technician and he´s in the process of trying to start up a raptor rehabilitation center. Learn a little about Falconry in the US with this interview.

My introduction to falconry was back in the fall of 2010. I had always heard about it, read articles and watched videos but never thought I'd be able to get into it because I didn't know anyone that lived near me that was a practicing falconer. I remember watching the red tailed Hawks and swainsons Hawks circling the hayfields while I cut and raked the fields. From the first time I saw one take a cottontail I was completely hooked on birds of prey.
Fast forward to the summer of 2010. I had just moved to Stephenville, Texas and was going into a local restaurant when I saw a local newspaper that had a cover story about a guy who used Harris Hawks for bird abatement and at the end of the article, it had his number. I called the number and he, Jack Brady, answered. After we talked for a while he asked me if I'd be interested in going on a duck hunt with him and his peregrine when duck season came around. I told him yes and he said he'd call me when the time came, I honestly thought I wouldn't hear from him again but one day after duck season had started I received a call and he told me when to meet him. I met him and his friend, Steve Boyd, and watched the peregrine take a mallard. After the hunt Mr. Brady asked if I would like him to sponsor me for my apprenticeship, of course I couldn't let the opportunity slip and so I said yes.
After that, according to the U.S. Regulations, I had to send an application and application fee to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, take a test, build my mews and weathering yard and then have them inspected by a local game warden. It most definitely was a lot of work but it was worth every bit of it. The first bird I ever worked with was a captive bred male Harris hawk that my sponsor had but my first bird that was on my was a passage male Harris hawk that we trapped in south Texas. He was a great bird and we caught a lot of game together.

What´s your opinion about aplomado falcons (falco femoralis)?
Pessoalmente eu só vi um falcão de coleira de perto, uma fêmea chamada Tia, e ela era uma ave incrível. Eu amei o quão rápido ela saia do punho, sua determinação em voar embaixo de suas presas, mesmo se elas tinham a vantagem inicial. Eu sempre amei os voos diretos de perseguição com falcões pequenos. Eu também gosto de como ela era agressiva e, pelo que eu li, todos eles parecem ser assim.
I've only ever seen one aplomado fly in person, a female named Tia, and she was an amazing bird. I loved how quick she was off the fist, her determination in flying down her game even if they had the initial advantage. I've always loved the direct pursuit flights from small(er) long wings. I also like how aggressive she was and, from what I've read, they all seem to be.

You fly Harris Hawks, and believe they are awesome birds. What characteristic in behavior or in training make them so incredible?

Without trying to be too lengthy here, I train my birds just as I train all of my raptors. I keep all of my birds completely unhooded so that they are totally immersed in my day to day activities. Also, I wait until they are completely used to me and standing on my fist before I begin dropping their weight. This reduces their stress during the initial manning phases. As soon as they are standing on the glove, I immediately start dropping their weight by feeding smaller portions until they begin hopping back to my fist. As soon as they are jumping reliably, I transition them to the lure and from then on they only eat on the lure. After they respond the moment the lure is offered, I take them out into the field and start producing game for them. This is the way I do it and the people who have seen my birds on the fist, lure and in action will vouch for how steady and effective they are.

Yes, I think Harris Hawks were made for falconry, everything about them lends itself to to the sport. Their versatility is no secret to falconers. They can be used to take fur and feather, sometimes both in a single outing. I know the same can be said about several other birds but the fact that we can do this so consistently is a testimony to the birds. Since they live and hunt in family groups, they lend themselves to their falconers and the dogs or horses that may be used alongside them. All of the ones I have had the pleasure of working with have been truly great birds to watch and work with.

The barn owl is an imprint and was rescued when only a few days old. We made sure that it had food at all times so that it never became hungry and started begging for food and we stayed with it constantly so that it wouldn't associate us with feeding times every time it saw us. When it came time to feed it we would get the food prepared and then bring the owl to the food rather than bring the food to the owl. At this point, we would whistle every time the food was offered to it. Once it was full summed and hard penned, we started offering smaller portions and whistled as we offered food so that it would start coming to us for food. Once that happened we proceeded as we do with regular training, calling to the fist from a few feet then across the room.

My experience flying Jade, my swainsons hawk, is one of the highlights of my falconry career. It was completely accidental that we trapped her. We were after a red tail when she hit the trap. She hit it with so much force and determination that I decided to keep her and give her a try. From the moment we got her home, she was an exceptional bird, truly a one in a million.
She stood on my fist within minutes of being home and the progress never stopped. I've heard all of the old stereotypes and "facts" about swainsons Hawks but I have yet to see anyone give them a proper try. They say they have tiny feet, completely untrue, her feet are about the same size as a male red tails and plenty strong enough to do the job. I've heard they are lazy and won't catch anything besides grasshoppers, also untrue, she routinely takes mice and chicks (thawed) that I toss into the air, midair. She is very quick off the fist and shows just as much determination as any of the other Hawks I've worked with. She is very picky about her slips but once she finds one to her liking she will launch a very determined attack. After seeing how good she was at taking things midair, I decided to try her on sparrows and she is now very good at taking them. She will sit in a tree and I flush them to her and then it is just like in our training, she rarely misses.
I honestly believe that swainsons Hawks are undervalued in falconry and while she may be the exception rather than the norm, I think the species as a whole should be reexamined. They obviously won't be for everyone or for headcount seekers but for pure enjoyment, I think they are perfect.

Minha experiência com o Peneireiro-vulgar (Falco tinnunculus) é um pouco distorcida. O meu é um macho de 3 anos que só foi usado como um pássaro exibição em um local parecido com um jardim zoológico, não foi manejado e nunca teve tornozeleiras e Jesses, assim que o treinamento foi e é um pouco lento. Mais uma vez, como acontece com os Swainson, eu não acho que eles são para todos, não porque eles são muito difíceis de treinar, mas porque eles são um rapinante muito especializado, mas estou definitivamente me divertindo com ele. . My experience with the European kestrel is somewhat skewed. Mine is a 3 year old male that was only used as a display bird in a zoo type setting, was never handled and never had anklets or jesses on so training was and is a bit slow going. Again, as with the swainsons, I do not think they are for everyone, not because they are too hard to train but because they are a very specialized raptor, but I am definitely having a great time with him. At the moment we are still trying to teach him that he is a falcon by offering him live food rather than thawed. The weight control is something we have to watch closer but it is not anything too complicated or enough to stop someone from attempting one if they really want to fly a Eurasian kestrel. I am currently on the lookout for a female to breed him to so that I can produce chicks and start them off right away as falconry birds.

Yes, we are allowed to trap passage peregrines here in Texas along the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. We are limited to only a few peregrines and the only way we are allowed to do it is to get our name drawn from a lottery. Only a few falconers are picked to trap. I will be putting my name into the the drawing this year. I have not had the privilege to work with a peregrine yet though I have been out with several people and watched them fly theirs. I have loved every second of it and the exhilaration of watching a peregrine in a tear drop stoop cannot be explained unless you have seen it. I fully recommend going on a hunt if you can.

My fiancé, Liana Winters, is a falconer, she is my apprentice. It is a blast getting to share these experiences and such an important aspect of my life with the person I love. She completely understands all the little quirks that go along with falconry. She is doing a great job with her passage female Harris hawk, Tayo. They have taken their first game together and her bird is very responsive to her and steady on the fist, on the lure and on a kill. I'm very proud of her and look forward to many more years and hawking seasons spent together.

How did the idea of the creation of the Cisco Aviary and Raptor Refuge come out?
A ideia para o nosso projeto surgiu apenas com base em nosso amor por todas as aves e a necessidade de um centro de reabilitação na área. Eu sempre quis fazer algo parecido com isso desde antes de me tornar um falcoeiro. Apenas após me reunir com as pessoas certas que as coisas começaram a se encaixar. Li e eu sempre pensamos que um dia faríamos reabilitação na nossa casa em pequena escala, mas depois de conhecer Nichole e James Moore, que também são meus falcoeiros aprendizes, o projeto ganhou vida própria. Estamos todos ligados por nosso amor pelos animais selvagens e as aves, em particular. Eu não poderia ter escolhido a dedo uma equipe melhor do que a que caiu em minha vida exatamente no momento certo.
The idea for our project came about solely based on our love of all birds and the need for a rehabilitation center in the area. I have been wanting to do something like this since before I became a falconer. It wasn't until I met up with the right people that things started falling into place. Li and I always thought that someday we would do rehabilitation from our home on a small scale but after meeting Nichole and James Moore, who are also my apprentice falconers, the project took on a life of its own. We are all connected by our love for wildlife and birds in particular. I couldn't have handpicked a better team than the one that fell into my life at just the right moment.

Estamos nos estágios iniciais neste momento. Estamos fazendo isso nas nossas casas com a esperança de obter o terreno para construir as instalações permanentes no futuro. Até agora, porém conseguimos reabilitar 2 corujões orelhudos (bubo virginianus), um gavião miúdo (Accipiter striatus), um falcão quiri quiri, um gavião do Mississippi (Ictinia mississippiensis), uma pomba (Zenaida macroura), 2 corujas de igreja(tyto furcata) e e uma coruja Megascops.
We are very much in the beginning stages as of now. We are doing it from our homes with the hope to get the land to build our permanent facilities on. So far though we have rehabbed 2 great horned owls, a sharp shinned hawk, an American kestrel, a Mississippi kite, a mourning dove, 2 barn owls, and a screech owl.

How do you evaluate the importance of environmental education projects nowadays in the US?
A necessidade de educação ambiental aqui nos Estados Unidos e no mundo como um todo está em um momento de ascensão. Estamos perdendo mais e mais espécies e terra diariamente e se não fizermos algo em breve será tarde demais. Os efeitos do que nós, como seres humanos fizemos ao meio ambiente já estão causando impactos negativos duradouros.
Pode-se olhar para as águias da Filipinas, a floresta amazônica, e a matança em curso dos elefantes e rinocerontes para ver o que nós, como seres humanos, temos feito. Aqui nos Estados Unidos, os nossos condores da Califórnia são os garotos propaganda para os impactos de longo alcance que as coisas aparentemente triviais tem feito na vida selvagem. No entanto, há coisas boas acontecendo, nos últimos anos, o falcão peregrino e as águias carecas têm aumentado em número de reprodução e na área de reprodução.
The need for environmental education here in the United States and in the world as a whole is at an all time high. We are losing more and more species and land on a daily basis and if we don't do something soon it will be too late. Already the effects of what we, as humans, have done to the environment are having lasting negative impacts. One can look at the Philippine Eagles, the Amazon rain forest, and the ongoing slaughter of the elephants and rhinos to see what we, as humans, have done. Here in the United States, our California condors are the poster children for what far reaching impacts seemingly trivial things have on our wildlife. However, there are good things going on, in recent years the peregrine falcon and the bald eagles have increased in breeding numbers and in breeding range.

How does your educational project work?
Nossos programas educacionais são elaborados para lidar com os obstáculos que a vida selvagem enfrenta hoje e como podemos fazer coisas para garantir a continuação da existência de alguns dos animais que estão em perigo mais imediato. Acreditamos firmemente que se podemos ensinar as pessoas a amar alguma coisa, elas vão protegê-la. De acordo com essa afirmação, tentamos envolver o público através de exibições de voos. Também trabalhamos com os proprietários para ajudar a determinar maneiras que a terra pode ser gerida de uma forma que promove um ecossistema saudável e ainda é capaz de fornecer as necessidades do proprietário. Our educational programs are designed to address the obstacles that today's wildlife face and how we can do things to ensure the continued existence of some of the animals that are in a more immediate danger. We firmly believe that if we can teach people to love something, they will protect it. In keeping with that statement, we try to engage the public through flight displays and hands on experience. We also work with landowners to help determine ways that the land can be managed in a way that promotes a healthy ecosystem and is still able to provide the needs of the landowner. It should be noted that while raptors are a major part of what we are doing, we also work with all birds, from farm birds to rescued pet birds to waterfowl and passerines.

What are your aims for the future?
Nossas eventuais metas para o futuro incluem a obtenção da terra para construir uma instalação permanente, que abrange todas as necessidades do que estamos tentando alcançar. Our eventual goals for the future include getting the land to build a permanent facility that encompasses all of the needs of what we are trying to achieve. We plan to have a rehab center, for birds that come to us, where we will make every effort to get them back out into the wild. We plan on building an auditorium for flight displays and aviaries and naturalistic enclosures for certain birds so the public can see them. We plan on having an area for birds that cannot be released to live out the rest of their days in complete comfort and will not be on display but will have a permanent home. As part of our goals in helping threatened wildlife we plan to partner with other groups to help in captive breeding projects to help restore breeding populations to their former territory.
